FAQs

Frequently asked questions

The questions our counter actually gets asked, and the ones that come up most often in our Google reviews. If yours is not here, call (520) 219-8852. Someone will pick up.

About us

Are you the MVD?

No. Arizona Motor Vehicle Express is a private company that the Arizona Department of Transportation authorizes as a third party MVD provider. We run most of the same transactions a state office runs, and we charge a convenience fee on top of the state fee to do it. ADOT lists us by name in its directory of authorized providers.

Fees

How much is the convenience fee?

It depends on the transaction, and it is charged on top of whatever the state fee is. Call us with the specific transaction and we will quote it before you come in. It is the one thing worth knowing in advance, and it is the most common surprise in our negative reviews, so we would rather tell you on the phone.

What payment do you take?

Visa, Mastercard, Discover, debit cards, NFC mobile payments and cash.

Visiting

Do I need an appointment?

For most things, no. Walk in. Road tests are the exception and are by appointment only. Off-site Level One inspections also have to be arranged in advance.

How long does a visit take?

About twenty minutes, according to Google's own visit-duration data for our location. Friday and Saturday around midday are the busiest windows; midweek mornings are the quietest.

What are your hours?

Monday to Friday 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM, Saturday 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, closed Sundays and major holidays. Some services may be temporarily suspended when wait times exceed open hours.

Where exactly are you?

6741 N Thornydale Rd, Suite 151, Tucson AZ 85741, on the west side of Thornydale just north of Ina, about a minute off the I-10 Cortaro exit. Costco and Topgolf are the nearest landmarks. There is a Smart Start ignition interlock office at the same suite number, so look for our sign rather than the door number.

Titles and registration

How do I title a vehicle I just bought in Arizona?

Arizona law requires you to apply for a title within 15 days of purchase, or a penalty may be assessed. Bring the completed transfer form, the original title, your driver license or state ID, proof of insurance and payment for the registration fees. If the vehicle has more than one owner, who has to sign depends on the legal status printed on the title: with "AND" or "AND/OR" both parties must sign to apply for a title, and with "OR" either owner has full authority to transfer ownership. Check the title before you come in, or call us and we will read it with you.

Does my car need an emissions test first?

It depends on where the vehicle is registered and how old it is. ADOT requires emissions testing in the Phoenix and Tucson metropolitan areas, including for people who commute into them, and exempts vehicles that are five years old or less, 1966 model year or older, or electric. Most of Tucson is inside the testing area but not every address we serve is. Call us with your address and vehicle year and we will tell you whether you need a test before you drive out.

I bought a car with no title. What now?

That is the bonded title process, and it starts with a Level One inspection on the vehicle. We do those here, or come to the vehicle if it will not drive. Bring whatever paperwork you have, even if it is only a handwritten bill of sale.

Inspections

Can you do my Level 2 or Level 3 inspection?

No. ADOT allows Level I inspections at any MVD or authorized third-party provider, which is us, but Level II and Level III are conducted only at specific state inspection locations and only by appointment. We do Level One here or off-site at your vehicle.

Driver licenses

I just moved to Arizona. What do I need for a license?

ADOT's own list for a new resident is three things: proof of authorized presence in the U.S., your current driver license or identification card from your previous state, and your Social Security number. Bring the originals. What ADOT does not publish is how recently those documents have to have been issued, or what happens if your out-of-state license has already expired, and that is the part people get wrong. Call us with your situation before you drive out and we will tell you what we can and cannot process.

Do I still need a Travel ID to fly?

Federal REAL ID enforcement began on 7 May 2025. To fly domestically you need a REAL ID-compliant credential, such as the Arizona Travel ID, or another federally accepted form of identification such as a valid U.S. passport. We issue the Arizona Travel ID here.

Can I take my road test here?

Yes, by appointment. Bring proof of current insurance and current registration for the car you will test in, and make sure the vehicle is roadworthy. Applicants under 18 must have held an instruction permit for at least six months, and a parent or legal guardian has to come with them.

OHV

Do I need an OHV decal, and can I get one here?

If your off-highway vehicle was built primarily for use over unimproved terrain and weighs 2,500 pounds or less, it needs a valid Arizona OHV decal to run on public and state trust land. The decal is $25 per year plus processing and is valid one year from purchase. Before you can buy one, a registered owner has to take the free Game and Fish course "OHV Decal: Safe & Ethical Riding in Arizona", so it is worth doing before you come in. Arizona residents can buy the decal here over the counter. Non-residents can too, if they are getting street-legal registration through the MVD; non-residents who do not need street-legal registration buy theirs from Arizona Game and Fish instead.

Other services

Do you do notary work?

Yes: titles, affidavits, bills of sale, letters of permission, motor vehicle documents and powers of attorney, on site or at your location. We also pull 39-month and certified 5-year motor vehicle records, and handle insurance verification to reinstate a suspended registration.

Still deciding whether a third party office is right for what you need? The MVD versus third party comparison lays out what we can and cannot do.

Still not sure?

Someone at the counter picks up the phone. Ask us the convenience fee for your transaction before you drive out. It is the thing our reviewers most often say they wish they had asked.
